Is It the Shoes?
No matter how impressive your résumé is or how big of a job you’re competing for, first impressions are persuasive and lasting. That means giving a great interview. Here are a few tips to clinch the deal:
Show your best side. Find out what the dress code—even if unspoken—is at your prospective workplace and match it, erring on the side of formality. Arrive early and treat support staff politely.
Project confidence. A job interview is no time for false modesty or self-deprecation. Sell yourself with stories about how you’ve used your experience to solve issues like those your prospective employer faces. (The article “In the Hot Seat,” offers more tips.)
Go prepared. Know everything you can about the company and the position. Take extra copies of your résumé, and stock your portfolio with your most relevant samples.
Stay positive. In your responses, concentrate on the skills and experience that you bring to the job and the difference that you can make to the organization. If you’re asked about setbacks, cast them as learning experiences. If you disagree with your interviewer about something, acknowledge it and move on.
Of course, if your favorite pair of Manolos
inspire confidence, slip them on.
