Leading Under Pressure

How do you respond to pressure? If you’re like many corporate executives and entrepreneurs, pressure gives you the stamina to solve problems and overcome obstacles as you meet the challenges of business. But this drive often comes at a price: poor health, strained personal relationships and eventual burnout. In her book Leading Under Pressure: Maximize Your Health While Building Your Wealth, Gabriela Corá, a practicing psychiatrist and MBA, argues that good health and entrepreneurship aren’t mutually exclusive. Rather, better health can lead to higher productivity and performance.

Corá suggests considering health and performance as equal factors in gaining success, while setting a goal to be as healthy and productive as possible. The opposite state—poor health and low productivity—equals “burnout.” Coffee-fueled entrepreneurs may be highly productive, Corá suggests, but they need to maximize what she calls the “Four Pillars of Biological Health”: nutrition, exercise, sleep and relaxation techniques. The result may be the performance boost you need to take your business or career to the next level.
